Gordon Russell was a design pioneer - a furniture designer, maker, calligrapher, educator, entrepreneur and champion of accessible, well crafted design. His great skill was making connections between hand and machine, craft and design, theory and practice, landscape and architecture.
Schooled in the Arts and Crafts tradition of the Cotswolds he believed that good design can have a lasting impact on people's lives and delivered this message to an international community of both manufacturers and the public alike. His legacy lives on in Britain's vibrant design industry.
The film introduces the man, his innovations and passions, through words of friends and colleagues including Ray Leigh, Trevor Chinn and Professor Ken Baynes. It offers a unique insight into his ambition to teach the machine manners and deliver beautifully crafted furniture to a wide market.
"Gordon Russell's multi-faceted life... should be an inspiration to everybody, especially those involved in Design, the Arts, the Crafts and Furniture making" Sir Terence Conran
This film was originally produced in 2010 and sold as a DVD in the Museum. Although more than a decade old the views from the friends and colleagues that knew him well are as relevant today as there were at the time of recording.
