Legacies of the Festival of Britain (1951).

The Festival of Britain (1951) proposed a template for the reconstruction and development of British society after WW2. The South Bank site, in London, showed how art, architecture, design and experience could be combined in everyday life. The Festival was an enormous popular success and its influence can be traced in the development of new towns, new University campuses and in the access-all-areas transformation of the public realm in towns and cities across Britain.
Design historian, Dr. Paul Rennie, will describe the wide-ranging and lasting impact of the Festival on aspects of life, art and design in Britain.
Dr Paul Rennie is a poster enthusiast, historian and collector. Paul teaches in graphic communication design at Central Saint Martins, London and has published various books about the history of the modern poster in Britain. Paul’s most recent book is about the designer, Tom Eckersley. Paul and Karen Rennie curate a modern design shop, Rennies Seaside Modern, in Folkestone.
This talk is organised by the Friends of the Gordon Russell Design Museum, and profits will help to support the continuing work of the Museum.  Further details can be found on our website www.gordonrusselldesignmuseum.org
